Aston Martin is preparing its latest model with a V12 engine.

Aston Martin started using V12 engines not so long ago: the 5.9-liter atmospheric model AM11 debuted in 2001 on the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish.

Subsequently, such engines were put on many models, and in 2016 saw the Aston Martin DB11 with a new-generation V12 5.2 biturbo engine.

However, the era is coming to an end: the company announced the last model with a 12-cylinder engine.

The honor to become the «last» fell to the supercar Aston Martin V12 Vantage: it will be presented in 2022.

This will be the extreme version of already existing «younger» model Vantage, which is equipped with AMG V8 biturbo-engine.

A similar modification was in the range of the last generation: then buyers could choose between atmospheric V8 and V12 of its own production.

Details and characteristics of the new 12-cylinder supercar will appear later.

The refusal from multi-cylinder motors is a general tendency of modern motor-industry, in fact, cars with such engines are liable to increased «ecological tax».

But in Aston Martin’s case, there is one more factor. The first V12 engine was developed back in the days when the British company was owned by Ford, and since then, the production of such engines is carried out in a separate workshop at Ford’s plant in Cologne.

Ford itself does not use these engines and has long wanted to curtail the production of Aston engines, but so far, the companies have been able to agree on continued cooperation. Judging by all appearances, it will be over soon.

Now Aston Martin installs V12 engines on DB11 (only coupe) and DBS models.

The main bet is made on AMG V8 engines, and recently the first six-cylinder Aston Martin has been presented for a long time.

At that, there are no more twelve-cylinder motors in the AMG range.

The company also has a separate atmospheric V12 6.5, developed together with Cosworth, but these motors are actually made by hand and put only on the limited-volume Valkyrie hypercars.

Aston Martin will release «farewell» Vantage with a V12. The manufacturer showed a teaser of the forthcoming novelty called Final Edition.

Hardcore V12 Vantage will return to the Aston Martin lineup in 2022.

The company clarifies that this is not a limited edition, but the Final Edition, «farewell version», that is, the supercar will probably mark the end of the era of twelve-cylinder engines, after which the British manufacturer will seriously engage in the electrification of its entire lineup.

According to unconfirmed information, the novelty will get an engine from the limited edition V12 Speedster supercar.

The name Vantage is traditionally used to call the most powerful versions of Aston Martins.

The first such car, the DB2 Vantage coupe, appeared in 1951 and was equipped with an inline-six 2.6.

The Vantage became an independent model only in 1977, but even then it was equipped with V8 5.3 from Lagonda, which developed in different years from 380 to 457 horsepower.

Only DB7 Vantage (1999) had «tried» the V12 unit. The 5.9-liter engine produced 426 horsepower and 542 Nm of torque, endowing the car with uncommon dynamics for those times: five seconds to a hundred with a «manual» and 5.1 — with an automatic.

In 2009, the V12 Vantage with an upgraded 5.9 engine (517 powers and 570 Nm) was released, accelerating to a hundred in 4.2 seconds.

These figures were broken in 2013 by the V12 Vantage S. Atmospheric engine on the coupe produced 573 horsepower and 620 Nm, so it took 3.7 seconds to spurt from a place to a hundred.

The current Vantage was introduced in 2018, and for now it is available only with V8 4.0 biturbo engine with 510 horsepower and 685 Nm of torque (625 Nm in AMR version).

Acceleration to 100 kilometers per hour in such a car takes 3.7 seconds. The top speed is 314 kilometers per hour.

According to rumors, the new V12 Vantage, which will hit the market next year, will get a motor from the limited edition V12 Speedster and will mark the end of the era of twelve-cylinder units in Aston Martins.

On the barquette, the V12 5.2 biturbo motor produces 700 horsepower and 753 Nm, which goes to the rear wheels via an eight-band ZF automatic and an overdrive differential.

The V12 Speedster accelerates to a hundred in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour.

The management of Aston Martin has already announced that successors of Vantage and DB11 models will refuse petrol motors and transfer to electrified power-units.

The company is going to use hybrid units of Mercedes-AMG, as on DBX Straight-Six, and its full-fledged electric car will be released after 2025.
