Cadillac debuted Thursday’s 2023 lyrical electric crossover SUV, heralding a new direction and design language for GM’s luxury brand. The five-seater midsize crossover is aiming for approximately 482 km and will spearhead Cadillac’s transition to an all-electric vehicle by the end of the decade.

The Lyriq show car unveiled on Thursday will be at least 80% of what consumers can expect when it hits dealerships in late 2022. Pronounced «lyric», the Lyriq features narrow, vertical LED headlights and a Cadillac comb grille. The tapered rear also receives narrow vertical LED taillights.

It’s about as long and wide as the Cadillac XT5 but looks much lower. In pictures released by Cadillac, the Lyric’s long wheelbase nudges giant 23-inch wheels, while the wide track, low strut and swoosh on the roof make it look like a station wagon as well as a crossover coupe.

With an approximately 100-kilowatt battery pack mounted flat between the axles in the vehicle floor, the new integrated EV platform promises a low center of gravity and 50/50 weight distribution. Starting at rear-wheel drive, the Lyric will have a performance option with two motors driving both axles for all-wheel drive.

The design sounds like Cadillac is pushing performance towards efficiency, but the interior definitely indicates luxury. The 33-inch curved LED screen integrates the dashboard and infotainment system into one long, continuous display and touchscreen, similar to that found in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade.

The low floor and streamlined cluster create a spartan design that promises more openness in the cabin. The 19-speaker AKG Studio sound system will amplify sound, while the new road noise cancellation system debuting in Lyriq promises to muffle the outside world.

In front, too, everything is cosmic: a glowing badge, animated lighting when the owner approaches the car, a luminous grille (Bentley recently showed a concept of this kind, but somehow it was completely monstrously done there) …

By the way, yes, the radiator grille in the form of a heraldic shield is gigantic, that funny for an electric car (that’s why it’s not a grill at all, if you look closely, it is covered with a transparent casing), but somehow it does not cause dissonance for me personally, unlike the mega-strut of BMW. Finally, the vertical headlights.

They were one of the first ideas for the Art & Science style, but recent models, from the 2016 Escala concept to the new Escalade, have shown a departure from this element. Fortunately, they did not just return to it, but returned in the most radical way: now not only the DRL strips are vertical, but also the headlights themselves — LED technologies made it possible to make the lamps themselves not particularly noticeable on the «face» of Lyriq.

And the merit, first of all, in the fantastic work with backlighting. The taillights are still more or less vertical (like most Cadillacs over the past 50 years), but how complicated they are compared to all of the previous ones!

Let me remind you that the vertical lights themselves are a mark of the brand, reminiscent of the tail keels, but cars of the 2000-2010s were often criticized for being too simple a solution to the rear end.

Cadillac began to struggle with this in the restyling of the XTS and CT6, but the result was also an amateur, like the CT4 / 5 / XT6 … And now, Lyriq brought the rear end into space.

The entire Lyriq was built from scratch. Technically, this is the first application of the new GM Ultium electrical platform with a focus on cool batteries. The existence of the Chevrolet Bolt and the hybrid Cadillac ELR is not remembered, apparently, considering the early experiments.

The stated mileage without recharging is over 300 miles, that is, 480 km — about 8 times more than the average daily mileage of the owner of the Cadillac XT5. In the US, General Motors has begun a joint project with EVgo to install 2,700 fast charging stations by 2025, and they will be used by more than just GM vehicles.

The current debut, as noted at the presentation, takes place «in time for Cadillac» — electric cars are no longer surprising, but large corporations are just entering the game. However, although this is the first all-electric Cadillac, there are already plans for a second — a high-end Celestiq sedan, hand-built and with a price tag of $ 200,000.

It has not yet been announced, so it remains only to wait, but in the next 10 years, Cadillac should expect a full line of electric cars. And this already allows you to be calm about the future of the brand, since the demand for premium electric cars is highly anticipated (compare with Jaguar and Audi), and such positioning will allow you to have your own face, and not be redesigned by Chevrolet, for example, while Buick, for example, has huge problems with originality…
