A competitor for Tesla Model Y: Chrysler showed a prototype of the future Airflow crossover.

The company said that the first production electric car will appear closer to 2025, and the brand fully «green» intends to become by 2028.

Brand Chrysler belongs to auto giant Stellantis, which was formed early last year by merging PSA and FCA (now the «old» names are no longer used).

Indicators of Chrysler brand in the States are declining for the last five years. Thus, at the end of the «covid» 2020, Americans bought 110,464 cars, which is 13% less than the year before.

Last year, the decline continued: during the first three quarters of 2021 (more recent data are not yet available), brand cars sold 74,139 units in the home market, 2.3% less than in January-September of the previous year.

Chrysler’s problems, of course, are not related only to the current crisis. The matter is also that the brand’s lineup now includes only a couple of cars — the big 300 sedan and the Pacifica minivan.

The brand definitely needs a new model to stay afloat, but Stellantis isn’t in a hurry with it: Chrysler has no plans to update its lineup in 2022 and 2023.

As the company has confirmed now, the new model will appear closer to 2025: Chrysler announced this during the CES exhibition, which takes place in Las Vegas (USA).

Apparently, the role of novelty, as well as the first electric car of the brand will perform a crossover, prototype of which was presented at CES — Airflow.

Probably, the future «green» parket car will remain a historical name: the company has previously filed an application for a trademark.

This name the brand has used before, the corresponding four- and two-door cars were produced in the period from 1934 to 1937. In total, less than 30 thousand copies were produced.

The basis of the Chrysler Airflow was a new platform development Stellantis, designed for electric cars.

The power plant includes two electric motors (one on each axle), with a capacity of 204 hp each. (The manufacturer did not specify the total output).

There are no details about the type and capacity of the traction battery, but it is known that the range ranges from 563 to 644 km (the calculation was made according to the EPA cycle).

The prototype Airflow, which already looks more like a production car than the concept shown in 2020, got aerodynamically accurate silhouette, sloping roof line and 22-inch wheels.

At the front, there is an illuminated Chrysler logo in the center, which connects LED headlights.

Small air intakes are integrated into the front bumper. The rear LED lights are also connected across the full width of the stern.

The cabin is designed for four people, there are three screens on the front of the Chrysler Airflow, a couple more are built into the backs of the front seats and designed for passengers sitting behind.

The system is responsible for navigation, gives access to various systems and payment services.

The Airflow prototype also has a third-level autopilot (the company is cooperating with BMW on this issue).

It is assumed that the competitors of mass production electric crossover Chrysler will be Ford Mustang Mach-E, Cadillac Lyriq, BMW iX and Tesla Model Y.

By the way, today the company also hinted at further plans to develop the brand: it is expected to become fully «green» by 2028.
