Lexus has been experimenting with «charged» sedans since 2007, when the IS F model appeared with an aspirated V8 5.0 with 421 hp.

In the next generation of the IS sedan, this modification was abandoned, but soon they made a larger Lexus GS F with the same engine, boosted to 477 hp.

Last year, this model became part of history, but the idea itself is still alive! This is the third iteration of the Lexus super sedan, and again in the guise of the younger IS model. Although some ideas have been revised.

The full name of this four-door is Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance. That is, the new version has become ideologically closer to the standard sedans with digital indexes.

But at the same time, it formally opened the new F Sport Performance series with a «hot» temperament, because Lexus with the long-familiar F Sport prefix does not imply any increase in power.

Even outside, the «five hundred» no longer flexes its muscles like the previous full-fledged F-sedans.

The set of differences from the base IS model is relatively modest: different bumpers, extended front fenders, four exhaust pipes, black decor, lightweight 19-inch wheels. And also — a new humped hood, which is 50 mm higher than the standard one.

Under it is installed the same naturally aspirated V8 5.0 engine, which has been slightly boosted — up to 479 hp. and 536 Nm.

Also retained the eight-speed «automatic» and rear-wheel drive, but instead of the active differential TVD, which was the model GS F, this time used a conventional mechanical «self-blocking» Torsen.

It is stated that the goal of the engineers was to create a car with the most understandable and linear responses to the steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals.

Therefore — no technical tricks. Almost. The suspension has adaptive dampers, and an additional Yamaha damper is installed at the rear, which dampens body vibrations. Front brakes — with discs with a diameter of 356 mm, rear — 323 mm.

The Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance was 65 kg heavier than the IS 350 F Sport with a V6 engine and weighs 1765 kg.

The passport acceleration time to 60 miles per hour (97 km / h) is 4.5 s. For comparison, a BMW M3 sedan with a 3.0 bi-turbo six (480 hp, 550 Nm) and rear-wheel drive does this exercise in 4.1 seconds.

The new «five hundredth» Lexus will be sold only in North America, and the first cars will appear at dealerships only in the fall.

And chances are it will be the last Lexus with a naturally aspirated V8: Toyota will be phasing out this type of engine in the coming years.

What makes the IS 500 F Sport Performance Sedan different.

The novelty differs from the usual fourth-generation IS with the F Sport package by an aerodynamic body kit, a modified chassis, an atmospheric 5.0-liter V8 under the hood, an expanded set of options and interior decor.

Outside, the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance is the easiest to distinguish from other ISs in terms of exhaust: the «five hundredth» has two pairs of large chrome tailpipes, and the muffler leads are located diagonally, as on the old IS F and the current RC F. coupe.

A closer look will notice a more convex hood, which is 51 millimeters taller, as well as widened front fenders. Another highlight is the Enkei’s custom lightweight 19-inch ten split-spoke wheels.

The heart of the novelty is the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter 2UR-GSE engine. On the IS 500 F Performance, the unit produces a peak of 479 horsepower and 535 Nm of torque. The gearbox is an uncontested 8-speed «automatic», the drive is on the rear axle.

Compared to the one-wheel drive Lexus IS 350, the acceleration time from standstill to 97 kilometers per hour improved by 1.1 seconds to 4.5 seconds.

Lexus engineers emphasize that the IS 500 F Performance is not limited to body kit, decor and powerful engine.

The eight-cylinder sedan has oversized brake discs and an additional Yamaha rear damper, improved brake cooling, and increased rear suspension stiffness.

An adaptive chassis and a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential are standard. The curb weight of the Lexus IS 500 F Performance is 1,765 kilograms, that is, the V8 version is only 65 kilograms heavier than the V6 sedan.

Inside, the «five hundredth» Lexus IS is almost identical to a regular sedan with the F Sport package. Only the dashboard graphics and decorative inserts are different.

The rest of the difference boils down to an expanded set of basic options: the IS 500 F Sport Performance has a heated steering wheel, aluminum pedals, a multimedia system with a 10.3-inch touchscreen, and a set of Lexus Safety System + driver assistants.

By the end of the year, Lexus plans to present at least two «charged» models — a full-size sedan LS F and a coupe LC F. Probably, both top versions will receive a new V8 turbo engine with a capacity of over 600 horsepower.
