The electric pickup Lordstown Endurance is presented in America.
American startup Lordstown Motors is the heir to Workhorse, which showed the first example of an electric truck three years ago.

Stephen Burns, founder of Workhorse, set up a new company specifically to buy for $ 20 million the General Motors Ohio site, where the Chevrolet Cruze used to be assembled.

Interestingly, the money was allocated to him by the GM concern itself: the loan amount was 40 million dollars, and in the future it can grow to 50 million.

The refurbishment of the plant is nearing completion, but for now the company has arranged a presentation of the Lordstown Endurance pickup truck, ready for production.

The electric truck has quite traditional proportions and does not strike with insane design. It was designed by Hydra Design Labs.

The pickup has a frame structure and a traditional chassis scheme: in the front there is a double-lever with springs, in the rear there is a dependent leaf spring suspension, and the springs are fixed on the outside of the frame.

But Lordstown Endurance has a different twist — the motor-wheels, developed in conjunction with the Elaphe firm. A compact electric motor is built into each of the four wheels, and they deliver about 600 hp in total and the torque at the wheels reaches 6,000 Nm.

The company loudly declares the advantages of such a solution (modest size, minimum of moving parts), but the main disadvantage has not gone anywhere — these are large unsprung masses.

By the way, the design of the wheels themselves with fake winding of electric motors is intended to emphasize the design with motor-wheels.

The traction battery with a capacity of 70 kW ∙ h is located under the cab and is inscribed between the frame side members: apparently, the width limitation has caused the capacity, which is not large at present.

The developers promise «over 400 km» mileage on a single charge and acceleration to 60 mph (97 km / h) in 5.5 seconds. The low maximum speed (128 km / h) is obviously limited by the traction characteristics of the motor-wheels.

And the company seems to have not fully decided on the weight of the trailer: values of 2.7 and 3.4 tons are indicated in different sections of the corporate website.

Unfortunately, during the presentation, CEO Steve Burns did not reveal too much new technical information, so we still do not know the key characteristics, including the capacity of the battery pack and the exact range.

But the head of the brand said that all electric pickups that will be built in 2021 have already been sold out on pre-orders. Vice President Mike Pence later added that about 14,000 applications were collected.

At the same time, earlier in Lordstown Motors announced that they plan to release 20 thousand electric vehicles next year.

The preliminary characteristics of the serial Lordstown Endurance are as follows:

• cruising range — 320-400 km according to the EPA cycle;

• acceleration to 97 km / h in 5.5 seconds (no payload);

• maximum speed — 128 km / h;

• a pickup truck can tow a trailer weighing up to 2722 kg;

• 7-kilowatt device allows you to charge 95% in 10 hours;

• at the fast charging station, you can restore a full supply of energy in 30-90 minutes, depending on the power;

• US prices start at $ 52,500 (excluding the $ 7,500 federal tax deduction).

The interior is shown as a sketch only. But the starting price has long been known: $ 52,500 excluding subsidies.

For comparison: the prices for the avant-garde Tesla Cybertruck pickup start at $ 39,900, and the basic version with one electric motor will be able to cover more than 400 km on a single charge, the maximum speed is limited at 177 km / h, and the weight of the towed trailer is 3.4 tons.

But Lordstown Motors will have almost a year of head start, because the start of sales is scheduled for early 2021, while Cybertruck is promised to be brought to the market only by the end of the year.

Lordstown’s goal is to build 20,000 cars next year. Moreover, it is stated that 14 thousand orders have already been accepted, although the company did not report on the collection of deposits.
