The «pioneers» of the prestigious segment will be the Mazda 6 sedan and the CX 50 crossover, which will be the successor to the 2022 Mazda CX-5.

The new index in the name of the SUV may mean that the previous version will be sold in parallel, but it is obvious that these cars will differ radically, primarily in the technical part.

The date of the premiere of the new urban SUV has not yet been set, but representatives of the Japanese company are talking about the end of 2021 — early 2022.

Judging by the latest news, work is in full swing, because the test prototype of the Mazda CX50 (CX-5) crossover, completely pasted over with protective camouflage, is already undergoing road tests and regularly gets into the lenses of photo spy cameras.

At the same time, the crossover in the new body is one of the most guarded secrets of the Japanese brand, also because it bears the design decisions of the new «six», which should debut earlier.

There is no doubt that the designers of the Japanese company will continue to be guided by the proprietary concept of KODO («soul of motion»), which has already given us the impressive exterior of the Mazda CX 5 crossover.

Perhaps the new SUV will have a much more avant-garde design, because the front part will become more elongated due to the installation of longitudinally located power units.

In addition, in order to meet the standards of mid-size SUVs, the crossover must receive an extended wheelbase, which will definitely affect the geometry of the side body elements.

The current version of the Mazda CX 5 interior equipment with analog dials on the tidy and a modest 7-inch display of the multimedia center is definitely not suitable for the debut of the model in a more prestigious class.

The sophisticated audience will not be amazed by the widescreen touchscreens, even if they completely rid the cockpit of the physical controls.

While the interiors of Mazda cars remain a «weak point», so experts expect a real breakthrough from the Japanese in this direction — technical and design.

And yet, it is easy to assume that the crossover will borrow the new interior styling from the new Mazda 6 sedan, so all the answers will be received much earlier than the first official renderings of the SUV.

Specifications and filling

According to the company’s management, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will meet higher standards not only in design but also in performance.

There are almost no secrets left here: the range will include new in-line «six», moreover, it will be both gasoline and diesel engines.

Also in the lineup will be a new plug-in hybrid four-cylinder engine — a must-have option for the Japanese brand in Europe, where the 2022 Mazda CX 50 will have to compete with very serious competitors.

It will not be possible to do without a sports version of the SUV — at least 400-horsepower, which will be in any way comparable to analogues from BMW.

The very same list of power units for the CX 50 has already been published on the company’s website, however, only the names and designations of their versions are indicated without specifying the technical characteristics:

Recall that last spring, Mazda announced the development of a fundamentally new platform with a longitudinal arrangement of the power unit and a family of in-line 6-cylinder engines (gasoline and diesel) for this platform.

The fourth-generation Mazda 6 will be the first to try it — its debut is expected in late 2022, followed by the Mazda CX-5, as reported by the Japanese magazine Bestcarweb.

This means that the next Mazda CX-5 will be significantly larger than the current one, that is, it will move to the mid-size segment.

In addition, according to Japanese colleagues, it will have a coupe-like version with the CX-50 index, which will be positioned as an independent and even more status model.

Inline «six» will be hybridized to one degree or another — from simple 48-volt appendages with an auxiliary starter-generator to more complex «socket» combinations with which the Mazda CX-5 will be able to move exclusively on electric traction for quite a long time.

Drive — rear or full. The gearbox is a new generation 8-speed hydromechanical «automatic». Basic versions will probably still have 4-cylinder engines, but of course also installed longitudinally.

We will also see Mazda 6-cylinder engines on some upcoming image models of Toyota, with which Mazda is now working closely.

It turns out that in the next few years Mazda will finally move to the premium segment.

This means that the next generation Mazda CX-5 will greatly increase in price and is unlikely to have more circulation than its predecessors, but it will definitely earn more money for the company.

With the move to premium, there is hope for the expansion of the Mazda model range in Russia, which is still being formed with an eye on budgetary constraints.

Roughly speaking, it is still impossible to sell Mazda 3 at the price of Mercedes-Benz A-class, but in the next generation it will already be possible.

«Treshka», by the way, recently left the Russian market, and instead of it Mazda will sell the CX-30 platform crossover in our country.

At home, Mazda brings out more interesting novelties — the MX-30 cross-coupe with a gasoline engine.

It will also receive a hybrid power plant based on a new generation RPD in 2022.

Mazda CX-5: when will it be released in Russia?

The Japanese plan to show their new crossover in 2022, and since the current version of the model is successfully sold in Russia, the new product will certainly be brought to our market.

More exact dates will be available immediately after the debut of the related Mazda 6 sedan in 2022.
