Peugeot Hypercar 9X8 2022. Peugeot has not participated in 24-hour endurance races for ten years. But a return to Le Mans is slated for 2022!

And before us — the first images of the future racing car Peugeot 9X8, which is preparing for the new category LMH (Le Mans Hypercar), introduced this year instead of the LMP1 class.

So far, the five-meter Peugeot 9X8 exists only as a full-size mockup and computer images. But its main feature is already clear: the car does not have a rear wing!

The LMH category rules only allow one adjustable aerodynamic element, and Peugeot Sport has come up with an original solution. What is a secret behind seven seals, so that competitors do not know.

However, even without this, there are enough interesting solutions. For example, the headlights and taillights with three LED strips are designed in the style of Peugeot production vehicles.

Also, the glowing plates of the rear lights act as aerodynamic stabilizers. Wheel arches — with open sections at the top. There are no rear-view mirrors, instead there are cameras and monitors under the cockpit ceiling.

Before leaving Le Mans, Peugeot introduced diesel cars to the track, but ten years later the concept changed.

The future Peugeot 9X8 is an all-wheel-drive hybrid. A V6 2.6 petrol turbo engine with a 90-degree block camber is installed longitudinally behind the pilot’s back, which produces 408 hp.

It works in tandem with a seven-speed sequential gearbox and rotates the rear wheels.

An electric motor with a capacity of 272 hp is installed on the front axle. with a single-stage gearbox. The traction battery and the entire electrical system operate at 900 volts.

The output of the hybrid plant is the maximum allowable in the LMH category of 680 hp.

The current hypercar will be ready next year. So far, only bench tests of the power unit are underway. However, as before, Peugeot is not going to make a road version of the racing car for small-scale production.

The hybrid sports prototype will take part in the races of the 2022 season.

Peugeot has unveiled the 9X8 sports prototype for the new Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) class of the FIA WEC endurance races.

The parameters of the power plant of the car are strictly regulated and are already known, so now the manufacturer has paid attention to design and aerodynamics — for example, the car does not have the usual rear wing.

The new Peugeot racing car was created jointly by the Peugeot Sport and Peugeot Design teams and will compete in the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship.

“Since the 9X8 is a Peugeot, the initial sketch we followed was a large cat getting ready to jump — its posture reflected in the slightly forward-tilted cockpit,” notes Peugeot Design Director Matthias Hossann.

The brand’s family traits can be seen in the design of the front and rear optics (lion’s claws), the interior (i-Cockpit) and in the choice of color scheme — the hypercar uses the same combination as the models of the Peugeot Sport Engineering line: Selenium Gray with accents of acid green Kryptonite.

The name of the hypercar is composed of the number «9» — indicates the series reserved for the Peugeot sports prototypes for long races; letters X — symbolizes four-wheel drive and a hybrid power plant; and the invariable attribute of all the latest cars of the brand — eight.

However, the authors of the car are especially proud of not the identity of other brand products, but the aerodynamic design, part of which was the rejection of the wing.

“Its absence is an important innovation step,” says Jean-Marc Fino, director of Stellantis Motorsport. “We have achieved a certain degree of aerodynamic efficiency, which allowed us to get rid of this part. But don’t ask how. We intend to keep this secret as long as possible. »

Meanwhile, the Peugeot 9X8 has front and rear diffusers that provide pressure at high speed, and three longitudinal «fins», the purpose of which is to stabilize the car in corners.

A slight break in the outer panels at the stern, apparently, acts as a spoiler: the air currents enveloping the body form a high pressure zone in front of it, further increasing the pressure of the rear axle to the road.

The 9X8’s powerplant is called the Peugeot Hydrid4 500kW.

It consists of a rear-mounted 680-horsepower V6 2.6 biturbo engine, a 200-kilowatt (272-horsepower) motor-generator and a 900-volt battery developed by Peugeot and Total’s subsidiary Saft. Peak power — the same 680 horsepower, and during the race, the internal combustion engine and the electric motor can work both together and separately.
