The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S: the world’s best electric car.
The top-of-the-line version of Porsche’s first all-electric car shows the world what such perfection should look like.

I claim this handsome guy is the best electric car in the world. And it can hardly be otherwise with the price of the Porsche Taycan in the elite Turbo S version of $ 170,643 (over 11 million rubles — ed.).

Turbo electric car?

Porsche explains that this is just an additional brand — don’t take the word «turbo» literally in the model name. Just think of it as “incredibly powerful” the Taycan Turbo S is, delivering 751 hp. («Normal», without the S index, the car produces 670 hp), 1050 Nm and accelerates to 100 km / h in 2.6 seconds.

It is planned that in the future there will be less expensive and powerful versions of the Taycan (without the Turbo prefix), but now it makes no sense to enter the market — so as not to bring down the demand for elite modifications.

This costly premiere is Porsche’s pioneer in the world of electric vehicles. Although the company has extensive experience in the development of various hybrids under the hoods of both production cars and motorsport.

The Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo prototype has been powered by an electric motor since 2011, and the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is a worthy competitor to the Tesla Model S with its Ludicrous speed mode when it comes to capturing hot dragstrip videos (2, 8 seconds to «hundreds»).

But with such a time, the Taycan can easily cope without the fiery «heart» of the Panamera. The hatchback with five doors is slightly smaller than the Panamera and is built on a new platform. With lithium-ion batteries under the passenger compartment, the total capacity of which is 93.4 kWh.

According to the WLTP measurement system, this guarantees a mileage of 450 km for the Turbo model or 412 km for the Turbo S (the first model has a slightly better drag coefficient Cx — 0.22).

The power reserve on one battery charge, depending on the modification, is 412 or 450 km.
Each of the geared motors located at both the front and rear rotates a different pair of wheels. The rear engine is driven by a two-speed transmission, with first gear only engaging at start.

The chassis is fully controlled. Other differences from the «simple» version are carbon ceramic brakes, a dedicated inverter for overboost and larger discs.

All Taycan models with an 800-volt voltage system are double that of the competition. What for? Porsche says that by doubling the voltage, they have reduced the amperage, which allows the use of thinner cables with a smaller cross-section (read more flexible) and with more variation.

At special super-powerful charging stations (what will it be like to find them!), The battery will be able to gain 80 percent of the power in 20 minutes. Of course, there is the possibility of charging from a regular household network. The portable charger and charging cable will be sold separately.

On the go, the Taycan is a typical Porsche. The driving position is well known to us from other models of the brand: we sit low, the steering wheel is small.

Salon for four or five (optional). There’s plenty of legroom in the back row, but ridiculously small for the head. The seats are medium in size — both front and rear. The build quality of the cabin and the materials used for its finishing are amazing, the infotainment system, instrument panel and other control systems of the car for the driver are understandable and friendly.

The pedals and steering wheel are of medium elasticity, as in any Porsche (from the base Cayenne to the 911 GT2 RS). But the steering wheel is superb sharpness and precision.

You step on the accelerator or brake pedal and the car drives or stops with amazing precision. This is what sets some really cool cars built for the pleasure of driving, and it is typical of almost every Porsche, with the possible exception of a couple of hybrid models.

Now all Taycans are equipped with air suspension (it is possible that in the future the base models will receive spring shock absorbers and even become rear-wheel drive), as well as a wide range of various stabilization and suspension control systems (which is also typical for any Porsche), in particular, the roll suppression system and torque distribution moment between the wheels.

He is cool! The Taycan is incredibly comfortable, even on 21-inch Turbo S wheels. In my opinion, it has the most comfortable suspension of any electric vehicle.

With a considerable weight (2305 kg), the center of gravity is very low, so the stability is simply phenomenal, the steering wheel is responsive, the limit of loss of traction is unattainably far, the car is graceful and balanced.

The Taycan rides better than the Panamera or Cayenne than the Model S or Jaguar I-Pace or the Audi E-tron. This car is serious, dignified, quiet when necessary, and perky when you want it. And he is for every day!

The Taycan is also the nicest four-door Porsche to drive. I never thought that I would write something like that — because it does not have an engine in the traditional sense.

But at the same time, the response to the accelerator pedal is more than perceptible and smooth, the point when the physical effort from braking goes over recuperation is imperceptible, the car confidently accelerates and stops.

The most modern gearboxes with two clutches, hybrid installations, start-stop systems simply do not know how to work so smoothly!

The Taycan doesn’t sound the same as the gritty V8 — for the right V8 roar you’ll turn to Mercedes-AMG anyway. But in terms of driving settings, the electric car from Porsche is in no way inferior to the AMG 4-Door Coupe.

So, the best electric car in the world? Undoubtedly. But don’t think that the world will stop there.
