Lamborghini Sian 2021 is a new hybrid roadster.

Italian automaker Lamborghini has unveiled a new version of its first production hybrid, the Sian Roadster.

Externally, the car can be distinguished by the lack of a roof. There are no other changes to the exterior of the roadster.

The Lamborghini Sian is powered by a hybrid powertrain that includes a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine with 785 hp. (720 Nm of torque) and a robotic gearbox with an integrated 34-horsepower 48-volt electric motor.

The total power of the installation is 819 horsepower. Instead of a rechargeable battery, a supercapacitor is used, which is three times more powerful than a lithium-ion battery of the same weight.

The electric motor with supercapacitor weighs only 34 kilograms. From 0 to 100 km / h, the supercar accelerates in 2.9 seconds, and the maximum speed can be 350 km / h.

Only 19 copies of the new Lamborghini Sian 2021 roadster will be released. The cost of the supercar has not yet been disclosed.

The circulation of the Sian coupe was 63 units, and thus, together with the roadster, it forms the number 1963 — the year of the founding of Lamborghini.

The Sian hybrid coupe made its debut in September last year on the eve of the Frankfurt Motor Show and was Lamborghini’s response to the current environmental discourse in the auto industry, which requires massive electrification to save the planet from the so-called global warming.

Experts from Sant’Agata Bolognese chose a relatively easy path of «greening» and turned the middle-aged Aventador coupe into a low-voltage hybrid, that is, they applied a scheme typical for mass and relatively inexpensive cars.

But, of course, it was not without original solutions: a 34-horsepower 48-volt electric motor was implanted between an atmospheric V12 (6.5 liters, 785 hp) and a 7-speed «robot» with one clutch, and the electricity generated by it during braking stored in a supercapacitor located behind the driver’s and only passenger’s seats.

Compared to a lithium-ion battery of similar power, the supercapacitor is three times lighter (the hybrid module weighs only 34 kg), accumulates and releases energy faster, but is effective only at speeds up to 130 km / h, while the «maximum speed» of the Sian Roadster is 350 km / h.

The maximum total power of the power plant is 819 hp, it is controlled by a simple all-wheel drive system with a Haldex center coupling.

The Roadster gains the first “hundred” in 2.9 s, which is 0.1 s slower than the Sian coupe (probably, the effect is greater than the mass, the value of which is not given by the manufacturer).

Lamborghini does not say what environmental effect the hybrid scheme gives and how much it allows to reduce the carbon footprint, but the effect for the consumer is obvious — the electric motor in the transmission not only provides short-term additional power and better responsiveness, but also acts as a torque converter, that is, it smoothes out the roars at the moments of gear changes , which makes acceleration and deceleration smoother, and maneuvering at low speeds is greatly facilitated.

In general, in terms of technology, the Sian Roadster is no different from the original coupe, but it looks a little more impressive thanks to the absence of a roof and a more sculpted design of the engine compartment lid with two carbon roll bars.

Active cooling flaps in the stern, which react to the temperature of the exhaust gases, have been retained on the roadster.

In this case, we put the word «roadster» in quotes, since an open Sian, in fact, is not — a real roadster implies a classic layout, and for the Sian version without a roof, the Spyder prefix would be more suitable, which is used for open versions of the younger Huracan model.

But for some reason, marketers insisted on the «roadster» — let’s leave it to their conscience.

The main thing is that the few happy owners of this model will be able to enjoy the pure, high-revving singing of the V12 engine, and the hybrid superstructure does not interfere with this in any way.

The cost of the Lamborghini Sian Roadster has not been disclosed, since all the planned 19 copies have already been distributed to the best customers of the Italian brand.

Whether they should be jealous is a philosophical question.

Let us just note from ourselves that in terms of power, the Sian Roadster does not represent anything outstanding by today’s standards.

The popular Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock, which debuted the other day with an old-school compressor V8, has only 1 hp. less (i.e. 818 hp).

At the same time, one cannot say what looks less cool — it’s just a different, more crude aesthetics.

Sian Roadster is designed to conquer the hearts and wallets of sophisticated aesthetes, although today there are more interesting offers for them, for example, De Tomaso P72.
