BMW i7 2022: Luxury electric sedan preparing to debut.

In 2022 BMW plans to show not only the updated 7-series car, but also its all-electric version, which should go into production in 2023.

The approximate characteristics of the electric «seven» BMW i7 2022 model year was announced last autumn: the power of all-wheel drive transmission no less than 400 kilowatts (equivalent to 544 «horses»), traction battery of 100 or more kilowatt-hours and free-range performance over 500 kilometers.

Thus Bavarians have already kept in mind that to confront them on the market will be an electric Mercedes-Benz EQS, which surely will get AMG-version with about 600 hp.

Giving metered information about their new product during 2021, the Bavarians kept specifying that the BMW i7 would be the first luxury electric sedan on the global market.

They deliberately did not mention models such as the Genesis Electrified G80, Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT, apparently implying by «luxury» some special standards of quality and equipment.

They didn’t even compare themselves with the Mercedes EQS, believing that the competitors built a hatchback.

In the meantime, preparations for the world premiere were in full swing: the electric sedan was actively tested in different temperatures and in different road conditions.

The exterior of the car all this time was carefully hidden, but judging by the available photos, it will be similar to the appearance of conventional gasoline and diesel sevens of the new generation.

Review

The 2022 BMW i7 may get a longer wheelbase to better accommodate the huge battery pack.

The most curious parts of the car — front and rear — is still hidden by a thick camouflage film, but the visible blocks of the main headlights suggest that we are waiting for a two-level design with narrow LEDs in its upper part.

While running lights are not visible, as completely hidden behind the masking, but remembering the BMW Concept XM, which the Bavarians called an example of their new brand style, the appearance of double-deck headlights is almost a confirmed fact.

Interior

Talking about the interior of the luxurious Bavarian «electric car», you can face a lot of questions regarding the unification of the interiors of cars with combustion engines with the interior design of the i7.

But referring to the same concept XM, it is easy to assume that both there and there the multimedia system iDrive of 8 generation will successfully fit in, consisting of two displays occupying the most part of width of the front console.

German designers can «play» with the rest, for example, having offered new forms of air ducts, having changed blocks of buttons on «spokes» of the multicontrol, etc.

Technical filling and power reserve

For sure, BMW i7 2022 will become all-wheel drive, that is it will have one electric motor on each wheel.

The corresponding to this scheme transmission is already ready — it is the fifth generation eDrive technology, the work of which can be assessed by iX and i4 models.

It is likely that Germans will prepare its upgraded version, but it is unlikely to change the original planned power figures much.

In the meantime, the latest news suggests the development of a 106.3 kWh battery which will definitely allow driving 500 kilometers on a full charge.

At the same time, the Mercedes EQS 450+ already offers 563 kilometers by EPA, so in the remaining time the Bavarian engineers will have to somehow solve this serious «problem».

Prices and release date

But according to some reports, the manufacturer intends to show the new «seven» in its classic and electric versions in the first half of 2022.

This will be a truly high-profile event, as BMW is preparing to present all modifications at once, including hybrid ones. As for the first sales of i7 sedans, they should be expected no earlier than the beginning of 2023.
