Caterham in Italian: Camal Super**GA with carbon fiber body for 300 thousand euros.

Turin-based design studio Camal has unveiled its next eccentric project — a Super**GA roadster based on the British Caterham Seven 485.

A completely new handmade body will cost as much as five donor roadsters.

Founded in 2008 by car designer Alessandro Camorali (formerly of Bertone, Fiat and Ferrari), Camal is already famous for several unusual projects like the Viva hybrid horse-electric carriage and the Aznom Palladium luxury sedan based on the Ram 1500 pickup.

Among the latest projects made for a third-party customer is also the elegant mid-engine coupe Bermat GT, while the Super**GA is the Turin studio’s own initiative.

The unusual name can be interpreted in two ways. Some people like provocative «superfiga,» others like geographical association: there is a winding street Superga in the suburbs of Turin leading through the forest on a hill 433 m high to the eponymous basilica, formerly a time race was held on this serpentine road.

Super**GA is an attempt of modern interpretation of classical Lotus Seven, which direct heir is Caterham Seven, and the company Caterham Cars in every possible way cares of these sports cars’ old-school design, so they look almost the same today as in the 70-s.

The Super**GA, on the contrary, makes it clear at a glance that it’s the brainchild of the 21st century: a streamlined carbon-fiber body hides the rear wheels and flaunts the front ones to preserve the classic roadster style, while the front wheels don’t even have wings.

The radiator grille with a funnel pattern has an LED outline and core.

Under the grille is placed a carbon fiber splitter. The exhaust is behind the front wheels — the spigots are on shaped carbon fiber sills.

The windshield is very low — you have to drive with a helmet, and there are cameras instead of mirrors.

There are individual fairings behind the seat headrests. The stern is crowned by a developed diffuser and oval concentric lantern, reminiscent of a jet engine nozzle.

Interior is also much more modern than in the Caterham Seven: comfortable chairs with leather upholstery, multifunctional steering wheel, on the front panel — three screens, the dashboard is styled as the two analog dials.

The gearshift mechanism is placed in a transparent tunnel so that you can enjoy its technical aesthetics, and under it there is a nitrous oxide tank, which we are unlikely to see on the production version.

Technical stuffing is the same as in the top Caterham Seven 485 for continental Europe (in the UK, the top version has the index 620 and it is more powerful).

The 2.0-liter 240-horsepower Ford Duratec gasoline engine is mated with a five-speed manual transmission, which transmits all power to the rear wheels through a self-locking differential.

Dynamic characteristics of Super**GA have not been announced, but we assume they are about the same as in the Caterham Seven 485: acceleration to «hundred» in 3.4 seconds, the maximum speed — 225 km/h.

Caterham weighs a little more than 500 kg and Super**GA is unlikely to be heavier even taking into account the rich equipment with electronics — extra kilograms compensate carbon fiber body.

Camal Studio conceived Super**GA as a small-scale project with a price tag of about 300 thousand euros per unit, but a specific circulation and terms of delivery have not yet been named.

Meanwhile, the original Caterham Seven 485 now costs from 48,995 euros.
