Following the premiere of the Ford F-150 electric pickup truck, its main competitor, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, is getting ready to roll out.

Not unlike the redesigned 2022 Silverado, the Silverado EV electric pickup was built from the ground up and boasts «an amazing combination of capability, performance, and versatility.»

We’ll get to all that in a moment, but we’ll start with the truck’s distinctive design, which is softer and more opulent than traditional pickups.

This is immediately evident as the truck has an aerodynamic front end that has been designed to effectively direct air down the body, greatly reducing drag and turbulence.

Speaking of which, the Silverado EV WT is expected to have one of the lowest drag coefficients of any production full-size pickup truck.

The Silverado EV has a short front overhang and a fully enclosed grille, behind which is a lockable and weatherproof compartment that allows owners to store gear and equipment inside.

The company also plans to offer an assortment of accessories and the company has demonstrated spacers as well as cargo nets.

Moving down the sides, we see a streamlined body, pronounced wheel arches and 24-inch wheels. These are connected by plastic body cladding and angled accents on the rear struts.

At the rear is a 1,803-millimeter cargo compartment with an available flex middle door that resembles the one used on the Chevrolet Avalanche. This allows owners to expand the cargo area at the expense of the interior.

With the tailgate closed and the middle door open, the Silverado EV will be able to carry items longer than 2,743 mm. If that’s not enough, the available hinged rear door can be lowered to provide 3,302 mm of space.

Attractive design remains in the cabin as well, as the Silverado EV is first equipped with an 11-inch digital dashboard and a 17-inch infotainment system.

These are joined by a fixed glass roof, a head-up display and two-tone leather seats with red inserts.

We also see a steering wheel with a trimmed bottom rim, a column-mounted shift lever, and a dedicated climate control.

The rear seats are heated, and Chevrolet says people taller than 1829mm will be comfortable in both the front and back.

In addition, the modular center console has a capacity of more than 31.8 liters, and that’s enough to accommodate a lunch fridge.

Chevrolet hasn’t said much about the WT package, we only know it’s pretty basic.

Color splashes are noticeably absent, while the digital dashboard and infotainment system have smaller, less showy displays.

The Silverado EV will arrive in spring 2023 in the WT version and will have 510 hp and 834 Nm of torque, and GM estimates a range of more than 644 km.

Initially the payload will be 3,629 kg, but eventually Chevrolet will offer a maximum towing package that will increase that to 9,072 kg.

The first Silverado EV will be available in the fall of 2023 and will be equipped with an all-wheel drive system with two engines rated at 664 hp and 1,056+ Nm).

This is impressive, and Chevrolet noted that the model will have a wide open power mode that allows the truck to accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in less than 4.5 seconds.

The staggering numbers don’t end there, as the edition will have a range of 644 km and a price tag of $105,000.

Once production ramps up, Chevrolet will release a full portfolio of Silverado EVs, including the entry-level WT variant, which starts at $39,900.

It will be joined by additional variants, including a Trail Boss version, and Chevrolet says customers will have the truck in a variety of price ranges: $50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 and even more.

These models will presumably offer different battery and powertrain combinations.

The first truck to be released will have four-wheel steering and an adaptive air suspension that can raise or lower the model up to 50 mm.

Buyers will also find the trailer-friendly Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, which allows hands-free operation on more than 321,869 miles of compatible roads in the United States and Canada.

When the battery is low, owners will be grateful for the truck’s ability to quickly charge with 350 kW of constant current. This allows the model to get a range of about 161 km on a ten-minute charge.

Speaking of charging, Silverado EV owners will be able to help stranded EVs through vehicle-to-car charging technology.

Details are limited, but customers will need to buy an accessory charging cord to share power with other EVs.

Chevrolet also said the truck will be equipped with a PowerBase charging system that offers up to 10 outlets for power tools and other items.

It provides up to 10.2 kW of power and will even be able to power your home.
