Jeep Grand Cherokee L 2021 is the new seven-seater Grand Cherokee.
Concern FCA introduced the fifth generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the novelty debuted in an extended version with three rows of seats.

This version, which received an additional letter L in the name, will very soon be on the conveyor of the Mack Avenue plant in Detroit, and will enter the market in the spring of 2021.

By the end of the year, the classic five-seater version of the SUV will be ready, followed by modifications to the SRT, Trackhawk and Trailhawk.

Topping the gamut is the rechargeable Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid, but it will likely arrive in 2022.

The priority launch of the seven-seat version, which first entered the Cherokee family, is due to the increased demand in the United States specifically for three-row crossovers and SUVs.

These vehicles account for up to 70% of sales in the mid-size SUV segment. Of course, Jeep has long paid attention to this fact and even brought the Commander model of the required format to the market in 2005, but it did not gain success and quickly disappeared from the scene.

The developers seem to have taken into account all the mistakes and are now ready to offer a new product under a well-established name.

From launch, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L will be offered in four trim levels — Limited, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve. The starting price is predicted to be around $ 40,000 (2.95 million rubles).

Design and dimensions

The car in the new WL body got rid of the Mercedes platform and moved to the Giorgio «trolley», which earlier formed the basis for the fresh models of Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio.

The integration of the third row of seats, of course, has led to a significant increase in dimensions. So, the new 2021 Grand Cherokee L was 384 mm longer than the outgoing five-seat SUV, and its wheelbase increased by 175 mm.

The front and rear tracks are also wider (38 and 33 mm). The final dimensions of the body: 5204x1963x1816 mm, the distance between the axles — 3091 mm.

In the design of the «fifth» Grand Cherokee, there is clearly a continuity with previous generations, but here borrowings from the new Wagoneer concept are clearly visible.

Along with the classic seven-section radiator grille and trapezoidal wheel arches, the new model received a rather massive bonnet, solid bumpers, neat lighting units with thin diode strips of running lights.

Top versions sport size 21 alloy wheels and a glossy black roof with roof rails. The off-road-oriented Overland features a more aggressive body kit, tow hooks and 18 or 20-inch wheels with off-road tires.

Salon Grand has undergone a major overhaul. The front panel has been reconfigured and higher quality materials have been used.

Instrument and technical equipment has been brought in line with the requirements of the times: there is a digital instrument cluster with a diagonal of 10.3 inches, a modern multimedia system Uconnect 5 with a screen of 8.4 or 10.1 inches, a projection display measuring 10 inches.

There are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto protocols with support for wireless connection of devices, a Wi-Fi hotspot, induction charging for two gadgets at once, 12 USB-A and USB-C ports.

Other options include an electric tailgate with contactless opening, seat ventilation and massage, advanced McIntosh acoustics (19 speakers), a rear-row passenger tracking camera.

The set of electronic assistants includes night vision, driver monitoring, keeping the traffic lane, recognizing road signs, detecting obstacles when leaving the parking lot.

There is also a second level autopilot capable of driving a car on highways. By the end of 2021, there will be an updated version that will allow you to take your hands off the steering wheel.

Depending on the layout of the second row (captain’s seats or a sofa for three), the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L has six or seven seats.

The volume of the cargo compartment behind the last row is 484 liters. With the sequential folding of the rear seats, the boot capacity increases first to 1328 liters, and then to 2396 liters.

Despite the platform change, the Grand Cherokee technically remained true to itself. It is still available with three all-wheel drive options:

Quadra-Trac I — single-stage transfer case;
Quadra-Trac II — two-stage transfer case with a reduction gear;
Quadra-Drive II — rear differential with locking function;

Rear-wheel drive versions will also remain in service. The suspension of the new Grand Cherokee L is fully independent multi-link.

An adaptive chassis with an adjustable ground clearance from 170 to 277 mm is available as an option (the standard ground clearance is 216 mm). The SUV can cross water obstacles up to 610 mm deep.

Well, now about the main thing — about the power units. The Cherokee retained the old engines: the base V6 3.6 Pentastar (294 hp, 348 Nm) and the powerful V8 5.7 Hemi (362 hp, 529 Nm).

The second engine is equipped with a low load four cylinder shutdown system. Both units are combined with an 8-speed «automatic».
