The Maserati MC20 2022 mid-engine coupe is what the company calls the beginning of a new era.

An extremely streamlined and speed-conscious car that puts engineering to the fore, it is «a new discovery of the brand’s original sporting DNA,» a welcome addition to the luxury sedans and crossovers.

The place of production sets the MC20 apart: it is the historical Maserati factory on Viale Ciro Menotti in Modena (the other models are in the conveyors of two companies in Turin, that of Giovanni Agnelli’s lawyer, AGAP, and Mirafiori).

Disputes about the appearance of MC20 began as soon as the first images appeared in the web.

The company itself considers the image holistic and clean, as well as making you «hear» the sound of the engine even when it is turned off.

Much had been said about the V6 3.0 Maserati Nettuno engine itself (630 hp at 7500 rpm, 730 Nm at 3000-5500 rpm, 90° block angle) before the car premiere, and at the presentation the company first emphasized that it brought Maserati back to producing its own powertrains after more than 20 years of hiatus.

It will be produced by the new engine plant in Modena.

Double supercharging, 11:1 compression ratio, passive pre-chamber, two spark plugs per cylinder, combined injection (direct at 350 bar and distributed at six bar) form the MTC (Maserati Twin Combustion) twin combustion system.

It is completed by two camshafts in each cylinder head, variable valve timing, a dry sump lubrication system and a variable capacity oil pump.

The traction to the rear wheels is through an eight-speed «robot» with two clutches and a mechanical limited slip differential. As an option, the latter can be replaced by an electronically controlled differential.

For the tuning of aerodynamics the company conducted real tests in a wind tunnel, as well as thousands of virtual tests.

Here you can count on the fact that the car has a decent down-flow to the road (figures are not announced), as the obtained coefficient of resistance to air («less than 0.38») does not stand out anything special even by the standards of medium-duty supercars.

Nevertheless, an excellent ratio of weight to power (2,33 kg/hp are declared) have allowed the car to brag of excellent dynamic parameters.

This is acceleration from a place up to a hundred faster than 2.9 seconds, 0-200 less than 8.8 seconds, the maximum speed over 325 km/h.

Braking distance from 100 km/h less than 33 m is also impressive, although it is not a record in the world of supercars.

The company is already taking orders for MC20 and serial production will start at the end of this year. Further plans are as follows.

We thought that the company may electrify MC20 by turning it into a hybrid, but it turned out to be even more interesting.

According to the assurance of the company, the model from the very beginning is designed to create a fully electric version and open top version.

Length, width, and height of the coupe are 4669, 1965, and 1221 mm, while the wheelbase is 2700 mm. Trunks: 50 liters in front and 100 liters in rear.

Carbon fiber monocoque allowed to get curb weight less than 1500 kg.

The «butterfly wings» doors are both beautiful and functional, according to the company.

The theme of the trademark trident is repeated more than once in the exterior: cutouts in the rear window are also an interpretation of the trademark.

«Simple shapes, very few sharp edges and a minimum of distractions,» is how the manufacturer describes the interior with two ten-inch displays (the dashboard and the center one for the Maserati Touch Control Plus infotainment system).

The working mood is set by carbon fiber, alcantara, the predominance of black and a few bright color accents.

The car is permanently connected to the Maserati Connect system, the kit includes navigation, Alexa assistant, Wi-Fi hotspot, remote control via smartphone or the Maserati Connect smartwatch app.

The tunnel has wireless charging for a smartphone, a driving mode switch (GT, Wet, Sport, Corsa, ESC Off), transmission and window control buttons, controls for the multimedia system and a duffel compartment under the armrest.

Both suspensions of the car are made on double wishbones with a virtual axis of rotation of the wheel. A ramp lift is available as an option at the front.

Brakes: fixed six-piston Brembo calipers at the front, four-piston at the rear. Brake discs are 380/350 mm in diameter.

Optional carbon ceramic 390/360 mm. Tires: 245/35 ZR20 in the front and 305/30 ZR20 in the rear.

For the body, the firm has developed six new colors (Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma and Grigio Mistero), «shining and shimmering in the sun».

But always the bottom of the car in «visible» carbon fiber or painted black. This underlines that the model is based on «engineering, pure technology».
