Mazda CX-5 2023: first photos and details about the new generation of Japanese crossover.

In 2020, Mazda announced its claim to the premium class, promising that both the new Mazda 6 and the next generation of the 2023 model year CX-5 crossover will be cars of a qualitatively different level.

For this they will move to a new rear-wheel drive platform, equipped with the latest six-cylinder engines, which will be placed in the hood space longitudinally, and equipment cars will be pulled under the class leaders: Audi Q5, Lexus NX and BMW X3.

Initial plans called for a Six in 2022 and the CX-5 crossover a year later, but all goes to the fact that the Parkett will debut earlier, most likely due to better sales prospects.

The first details about the new generation

The Mazda, which looks like the new 2023 model year CX-5 parkette, has already been spotted in Los Angeles, where it was tested at DOPs in the obligatory for such cases catchy camouflage.

Eyewitnesses have noticed that the crossover has become larger, and that its length has increased by at least 200 mm, which confirms predictions about technical changes, as well as with respect to the order of appearance of new cars.

Probably, they want to make the Mazda 6 a real premium sedan, while the parketta will «probe» the market, using its obviously popular form factor.

There is information that Japanese crossover of the new generation will receive an additional coupe version, which will be called the CX-50, while the basic one will largely keep the current exterior styling.

The 2023 Mazda CX5 spotted on tests had recognizable optics and a characteristic overhanging hood line, but also, unlike unofficial renders, round rather than octagonal wheel arches, and a straighter roof in the rear of the body.

It is noteworthy that the most camouflaged on the new parkettes are the rear pillars, not allowing to see the contours of the glazing.

This suggests that the designers are still choosing from several options and looking for a universal one that will also be applicable to the coupe version.

The CX-5’s transition to the premium class should most affect the crossover’s interior.

Obviously, the three «dials» of the analog dashboard will pass into history, as well as the small touchscreen display, which once gave way to the central place on the console to inconspicuous air intakes.

The new status will demand bigger touch screen, other design of the transmission block, where there will be no a gearbox lever, more functional multirule, replacement of door cards. In a word, theoretically, everything should be changed so that nothing would remind you about former «mass» parket car.

Technical stuffing and characteristics

Previously, the developer will offer an extensive range of engines, which will be four-cylinder units with 48-volt starter-generators, and more expensive modifications will be equipped with «sixes» — petrol Skyactiv-G 3.0-liter and turbo Skyactiv-D 3.3-liter.

For the «charged» version will be prepared an engine of HCCI type (with homogeneous combustion mixture ignition by compression), which will achieve relatively clean exhaust and simultaneously high efficiency of the power plant, and that’s not counting the various hybrids.

The base «gearbox» for the initial versions should be a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
