Back to the roots: the production MG Cyberster roadster will be shown in April.

The British brand MG wants to return to the production of sports cars.

The first full-fledged sports car in MG’s recent history will be an electric roadster, its development is almost completed, it will premiere in April 2023, sales will begin in the first half of 2024.

In the form of a concept MG Cyberster shown in April last year, then the British brand, since 2005 owned by Chinese concern SAIC, noted strong sales growth in key markets (China, Europe, India) and wanted to consolidate this success new sports car.

Under the wing of SAIC MG brand now produces mainly all kinds of consumer goods (crossovers, sedans, hatchbacks, station wagons), but for the past couple of years clearly marked sport vector of development, there were powerful and aggressive-looking novelties like the MG 7 liftback, and the Cyberster roadster will be the flagship of this direction.

According to British magazine Autocar, the premiere of serial Cyberster was supposed to take place in the second half of November at the Motor Show in Guangzhou, but now in China there is another outbreak of COVID-19 with all the quarantine restrictions and MG decided to insure — the premiere roadster moved to April next year.

In August MG has published the official video teaser of the serial Cyberster, but still before that patent images of the car sailed into the Network, so that to understand what in terms of design the buyers will get, you can already now, without waiting for the premiere.

The production Cyberster differs from the concept by more weighted proportions, «normal» wheels and mirrors, but the arrows of tail lights remained.

The production roadster will receive a traditional folding soft top, rather than the more versatile folding hardtop, which hints at a possible future appearance of a coupe based on the Cyberster.

About the technical stuffing of the production Cyberster is still unknown, but according to Autocar roadster will share with the hatchback MG 4 developed by SAIC modular platform MSP (Modular Scalable Platform).

The base version will have a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive, while at the top of the range will be an all-wheel drive twin-engine roadster with about 450 hp.

Because of the relatively boxy wheelbase, don’t count on a high-capacity battery, the range on a single charge will be around 300 km.

At the stage of the concept and its touring exhibitions at least 5000 people have expressed a desire to buy Cyberster, but not the fact that their enthusiasm will not die out by the time of the production roadster — success will largely depend on the price range, technical characteristics and the competitive environment, which is becoming more aggressive and saturated.

In any case, the MG sports car should have a positive impact on MG’s image and that seems to be its main mission, and good sales could be a nice bonus for the brand.
