The new premium crossover Nio ES7: excellent dynamics and plenty of entertainment on board.

The young Chinese company Nio continues to expand its lineup: the new mid-size electric crossover ES7 has been introduced.

It offers very rich equipment, and its 653-horsepower power plant allows you to accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds.

Founded in 2014 by entrepreneur William Li, Nio did not start out so briskly, went through a financial crisis in 2019, but eventually got on the right track and is now considered one of China’s most successful electric car startups.

Nio entered the European market in 2021 with global sales of 91,429 electric cars, up 109.1 percent from 2020.

From January to May of this year, the company sold 37,866 cars — 11.8% more than during the same period in 2021.

In general, the figures are good, especially taking into account the fact that Nio produces expensive premium electric cars that compete with Tesla and battery-powered models of the Big Three (Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz).

The current Nio lineup consists of the large flagship ES8 crossover, the mid-size ES6 crossover and its coupe-like counterpart EC6, the large ET7 sedan and the very fresh ET5 mid-size sedan.

The five-seat crossover ES7 belongs to the midsize class (overall length: 4,912 mm, width: 1,987 mm, height: 1,720 mm, and wheelbase: 2,960 mm). It will be between the ES8 and ES6/EC6, but the ES7 is the most dynamic model in the range.

Two-engine power plant (one motor on each axle) gives a total of 480 kW (653 hp) and 850 Nm, acceleration to 100 km/h takes only 3.9 seconds, the maximum speed is limited by electronics at 200 km/h.

At the heart of Nio ES7 is a fresh modular platform NT2 with a flat battery in the floor — the same as in sedans ET7 and ET5.

Basic equipment includes an adaptive air suspension on double wishbones at the front and a multi-lever design at the rear.

Disc brakes with four-piston calipers are supplied by Brembo. The body is made of high-strength aluminum alloy and carbon fiber.

The crossover’s underside is completely flat and works out to a low cx aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.263.

The protrusions and recesses on the body are the lidar and cameras required for the operation of the driver’s electronic assistants and autopilot.

There are three batteries for Nio ES7 — 75, 100 and 150 kWh, range on a single charge — 485, 620 and 850 km on Chinese driving cycle CLTC, respectively.

As an option for the crossover there is a retractable towbar with an electric drive, it allows towing a trailer weighing up to 2 tons and connect its onboard equipment to the battery of the electric car (output power — 3.3 kW), which is very convenient for a camper.

The interior is designed in a minimalist vein and trimmed with expensive materials (leather, wood), there is almost no bare plastic, and atmospheric diode lighting has a palette of 256 colors.

Multimedia touch screen in the center has a diagonal of 12.8 inches, above it is a talking head of the robot-assistant Nomi.

For entertainment lovers, a 1,000-watt audio system with 23 loudspeakers and virtual reality glasses are available.

All seats are equipped with heating, the front ones in addition have built-in fans and massagers.

The backrests of the rear seats are adjustable from 23 to 31 degrees.

For the front passenger in a semi-recumbent position there are leg supports — at the level of shins and feet.

The trunk capacity is 658 litres, folded rear seats allow to transport bulky cargo up to 1880 mm in length.

On the home market Nio ES7 will be released in August this year at a price of 468,000 yuan ($ 70,550 at current exchange rates), while the price can be reduced if you rent the battery — Nio is one of the few electric car companies, offering replacement batteries for their cars.

The Nio brand is not yet officially represented in the Russian market.
