Nio ES8 second-generation crossover: larger, more powerful and more luxurious than its predecessor.

Chinese company Nio closed out the year with Nio Day 2022 event, where it presented two new models — big flagship crossover ES8 of the second generation and coupe-shaped crossover EC7.

Founded in 2014 by entrepreneur William Lee, Nio in the second half of 2019 experienced a financial crisis and was on the verge of bankruptcy, but today it is considered one of the most successful Chinese electric car startups: in a fairly short time by historical standards, Nio managed not only to create and launch a full lineup, but also to start updating it.

Nio’s first-generation flagship crossover ES8 hit the Chinese market in mid-2018, and now the all-new successor on the fresh NT2 modular platform is ready.

At the same time the «first» ES8 is still on sale, the parallel existence of two or more generations of the same model — a common thing for Chinese companies.

Nio ES8 second generation is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor: overall length — 5099 mm (+77 mm), width — 1989 mm (+27 mm), height — 1750 mm (-6 mm), wheelbase — 3070 mm (+60 mm).

The body became lighter and stronger due to large-unit molding of the bottom parts, and the cabin is now strictly six seats with two separate seats in the second row, while the predecessor has a six- and seven-seat versions.

The space between the seats in the second row can be occupied by a cabinet organizer with a built-in refrigerator and wireless charging shelves for smartphones.

The seats in the first and second rows are equipped with multiple adjustments, heating, ventilation and massagers.

Volume of the trunk behind the third row is 235 liters, with the folded third row — 552 liters, but it is impossible to fold the second row because of the complex technical filling of seats — only to roll forward and set the backs closer to the vertical.

From the driver’s seat ES8 little differs from the younger coplatform crossovers ES7/EC7, but the flagship has its own palette of finishing materials and slightly more complex design of door cards.

Common to all new models Nio central multimedia screen has a diagonal of 12.8 inches, and a talking head of robot-assistant Nomi is installed above it.

The driver’s narrow instrument screen is complemented by a 16.3-inch projection display.

The audio system with 23 speakers is the most powerful in the range (2230 watts!), entertainment (movies and games) is provided by the proprietary N-Box console with virtual reality glasses.

Standard adaptive air suspension Nio ES8 (front — on double wishbones, rear — multilever) can adjust ground clearance in the range of 90 mm.

Brakes are supplied by Brembo. Standard size wheels are 20, 21 or 22 inches.

The body is integrated lidar, video cameras, radar and ultrasonic sonar, necessary for the work of electronic driver assistants and autopilot, but autopilots level 3 and above, allowing the driver not to follow the road, have not yet been legalized in China. The aerodynamic drag coefficient is 0.25.

Two-motor power plant (one motor per axis) in Nio ES8 is the same as in ES7/EC7: front electric motor gives 180 kW (245 hp) and 350 Nm, rear — 300 kW (408 hp) and 500 Nm, the maximum combined output — 480 kW (653 hp) and 850 Nm against 400 kW (544 hp) and 725 Nm of the top-class ES8 first generation.

Up to 100 km/h the new ES8 accelerates in 4.1 s, the maximum speed is limited at 200 km/h. The battery capacity is 75, 100 or 150 kWh, range on a single charge according to Chinese driving cycle CLTC — 465, 605 and 900 km, respectively.

The new Nio ES8 is already available to order in China, but live cars will not appear until June 2023.

A crossover with a 75 kWh battery costs from 528,000 yuan (5.33 million rubles at current exchange rates), with a 100 kWh battery — from 586,000 yuan (5.91 million rubles).

The price of the top version with a 150 kWh battery has not yet been announced, it will hit the market later.

Batteries can be leased and paid a monthly subscription fee, in which case the minimum price of Nio ES8 will be 458,000 yuan (4.62 million rubles).

To avoid wasting time recharging, batteries can be changed at special terminals on a subscription basis in a matter of minutes. By the end of the year the number of such terminals in China will reach 1700 pcs., in Europe — 120 pcs.

We should add that sales of Nio in January-November this year amounted to 106,761 electric vehicles, which is 31.8% more than during the same period last year (the company’s data).

Nio’s cumulative sales since entering the market reached 273,741 units. Meanwhile, December 12, Nio celebrated the release of its 300,000th electric car at a plant in Hefei.

This plant is part of a joint venture between Nio and JAC, initially with a capacity of 100,000 cars per year, it will soon be increased to 240,000 cars per year.

In the next six months, Nio wants to introduce five new models, including a station wagon based on the junior ET5 sedan.
