The production crossover Polestar 3 2024 has been unveiled.

The Volvo-owned Polestar brand has a long-awaited third model, which is important for two reasons at once.

Firstly, it is a sought-after crossover (previously there were coupes and liftbacks), albeit with a squat coupe-like silhouette.

And secondly, the Polestar 3 no longer resembles Volvo’s cars: it is the first model in the new corporate style worked out on the Polestar Precept concept car of two years ago.

Proportions successfully hide not inconsiderable crossover dimensions: the length (4900 mm) and width (2120 mm with the mirrors) Polestar 3 is close to the model Volvo XC90, although the height (1627 mm) gives him just 150 mm.

Wheelbase is 2985 mm. The body is made of steel the old way, the base wheels are 21 inches in diameter, and the ground clearance is 211 mm, although in cars for Europe it is reduced to 201 mm.

Flattened nose, sloping roof and «clean» body’s surfaces provided not bad for crossover aerodynamic drag coefficient Cx 0,29.

Moreover, the anti-wing is integrated not only in a trunk door, but also in the front end of the vehicle: the inflowing air passes in the slot between the headlights and rises on the hood.

Under the lid is a modest 32-liter compartment where you can store the charging cable. And the main trunk holds 484 to 1,411 liters (including a 90-liter underbody).

Minimalism continues in the five-seat interior. There are almost no analog buttons and switches here.

In front of the driver — a compact instrument panel, but in the center there is a 14.5-inch tablet.

Multimedia with Android Automotive OS has extensive online capabilities and the function of updating «over the air». The seats are upholstered in wool or synthetic leather.

«The Troika is built on the SEA1 (Sustainable Experience Architecture) electric modular platform, which was developed by Geely Holding for the widest range of battery cars.

Among its closest relatives are the Zeekr 001 and the Lotus Eletre. The chassis is with double wishbones at the front and multilever at the rear, already in the base there is a pneumatic suspension with dual-chamber air bags and adaptive shock absorbers ZF.

There are four-piston Brembo brakes on the front axle and simple single-piston brakes at the rear.

Polestar 3 has a two-engine all-wheel drive, but if the front engine traditionally drives the wheels through a single-speed reducer and differential, the rear axle uses a more complex scheme.

There is no differential here, and after the reduction gear there are onboard friction clutches.

The electronics can control the traction vector, and in some cases even disconnect the rear motor from the wheels, making the Polestar 3 front-wheel drive.

The total output of the two engines in the base version is 489 hp and 840 Nm. Such crossover can accelerate up to a «hundred» in 5,0 seconds. In addition, a version of the Performance Pack is offered: up to 517 hp and 910 Nm, acceleration to 100 km/h takes 4.7 seconds, and the bonus is recalibrated suspension and 22-inch wheels.

The top speed is limited at 210 km/h anyway. So far only one option of lithium-ion traction battery is offered — 111 kW∙h (107 kW∙h is used).

The battery has a working voltage of 400 volts, aluminum housing and advanced liquid cooling system with a heat pump.

On a single charge crossover curb weight of at least 2584 kg can travel up to 610 kilometers on the cycle WLTP, although the U.S. EPA declared only 300 miles (483 km).

To simplify the choice (and production) Polestar 3 is offered in the only initially rich configuration: there’s a panoramic roof, and electric front seats, and heated all the seats, and quasi-autopilot.

There are five radars, five cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors around the perimeter of the car. This is controlled by the Nvidia Drive chip.

And later the Pilot Pack will be available for order — a more advanced autopilot with frontal lidar by Luminar and two Nvidia processors.

There are two cameras in the cabin, which monitor the eyes of the driver: depending on his fatigue electronics can change the degree of intervention in the management of the car.

And if the driver fell asleep or lost consciousness, Polestar 3 itself will stop on the curb. In addition, the radar in the cabin can detect activity and trigger an alarm if there are children or animals inside the parked car.

And until the driver comes back for them, the system will activate the climate control and maintain a comfortable temperature.

The crossovers made here will enter the market of China, Europe and North America by the end of the year. Prices have already been announced: from 89900 euros in Germany or from 85300 dollars in the States.

And in the middle of 2024, the «three» will come to the assembly line at the Volvo plant in the U.S. (South Carolina), which now produces only sedans Volvo S60. After that, the two sites will share the geography of deliveries.
