The new Porsche 911 GT2 RS will be the first hybrid in the family, but so far without a plug.

The upcoming top version of the 992 generation Porsche 911 is expected in 2026 with the model’s first ever hybrid powertrain.

Environmental performance in this case is not the main thing, electrification should improve the already outstanding dynamic qualities of the legendary sports car.

Until last November, the 991-generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS held the title of fastest road car on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife, which is now held by Mercedes-AMG One, a hybrid all-wheel-drive supercar.

Porsche fans are looking forward to the new 911 GT2 RS as another breakthrough in terms of technology and speed, rumors have long circulated about the upcoming hybrid drive for the top version, but electrifying the model with a unique rear-engined layout has not been so easy.

A fresh batch of rumors about the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS was reported with reference to insiders by the British magazine Autocar.

On the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS, according to British colleagues, several fundamental decisions have been made.

Firstly, it will be a regular, not a plug-in hybrid, that is, it will charge itself, it is not possible to connect to an external source.

This choice was made primarily because the developers are literally fighting for every kilogram and there is a task for the hybrid superstructure to increase the weight of the sports car by no more than 100 kg.

In addition, plug-in hybrids are created, as a rule, in order to get a sufficiently long mileage on electric traction, but for the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS this is not important — in it the electric drive should provide a performance increase, not an improvement in environmental performance.

Secondly, the electrical architecture will be 400-volt, not 800-volt — also for «mass» reasons, the wires with a 400-volt architecture are thinner.

In the body and chassis, in order to reduce weight, there will be many lightweight parts, including carbon fiber.

Rear-wheel drive, apparently, will continue, and the electric motor will be built into the automatic transmission and will provide additional torque at the start and at low engine speeds.

The battery will be located behind the front seats, where the Porsche 911 has quite a lot of free space (usually it is used to resemble the rear seats or as an additional trunk).

The battery cooling system will probably be tied to the internal combustion engine boost system in order to gain a few extra pounds.

The battery will be charged from the energy of recovery when the car is braking and coasting, the capacity will be small, but sufficient to leave the parking lot in a quiet, exhaust-free mode.

One can only guess about the return of the hybrid power plant, but it is clear that it will be significantly higher than that of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS of the 991 generation (in the title photo), in which the 3.8-liter «biturbo» produces a maximum of 700 hp. and 750 Nm.

The expected weight distribution of the hybrid is 39/61 in favor of the rear axle.

The new hybrid Porsche 911 GT2 RS will hit the market in 2026 in a limited edition, the price will be at least 300,000 euros, but later Porsche will offer the same hybrid drive on more affordable versions of the Porsche 911.

The all-electric Porsche 911 will not appear until the next decade, while the company promises to release versions with internal combustion engines for as long as possible.
