Rivian R1S electric SUV: a long-range twin-engine top version is coming.

Debt-ridden American electric vehicle startup Rivian will bring the longest-range version of its R1S electric SUV to market this fall.

The Rivian R1S SUV was announced at the prototype stage in 2018 with three batteries to choose from — with a capacity of 105 kWh (Standard Pack), 135 kWh (Large Pack) and 180 kWh (Max Pack).

But he went into production with two junior batteries and with an uncontested four-engine power plant (one for each wheel), its total output is 847 hp. and 1231 Nm, with it the SUV accelerates to 60 mph in 3 s.

Initially, electric motors for Rivian were supplied by Bosch, but last year Rivian announced its own Enduro twin-motor powerplant and included it in the Rivian R1S and R1T configurators.

The declared maximum output of the Enduro is more than 608 hp. and 813 Nm, in the standard configuration R1S and R1T with it accelerate to 60 mph in 4.5 s, the advanced version of the Enhanced Dual-Motor AWD promises acceleration in 3.5 s, that is, it will still be less than the four-engine version , but close to it.

Rivian claims that a twin-engine powerplant is more energy efficient than a four-engine one, but specific figures for all possible combinations have not yet been made public.

Yesterday, RJ Scaringe announced that the long-awaited long-range version of the Rivian R1S with a 180 kWh Max Pack battery will hit the market in the fall, with a target range of 390 miles (628 km) on a single charge, while a four-engine SUV with a Large Pack battery at 135 kWh can travel 321 miles (516 km) on a single charge.

An important nuance is that the Max Pack battery is not compatible with a four-motor power plant (neither in a pickup truck nor in an SUV), that is, the maximum range will only be available with a two-motor Enduro power plant.

But there is good news: at the prototype stage, it was reported that the Rivian R1S with the largest battery could not have a three-row cabin configuration, and now RJ Scheringe reports that the Rivian R1S with the Max Pack battery will still be a 7-seater, that is by reducing the number of motors, it was possible to win a place for a large battery without prejudice to the cabin.

With the second and third row seats folded down, the Rivian R1S has a maximum trunk volume of 2,973 liters (including the front cargo area).

Prices for the twin-engined Rivian R1S with Max Pack battery have yet to be announced, but the R1T pickup truck in a similar configuration starts at $89,000 and has an estimated range on a single charge of 400 miles (643 km).
