The Subaru Outback of 2022 has changed quite seriously as part of the generation change.

Japanese engineers have redesigned not only the exterior and interior: they have significantly strengthened the structure of the car, making it stronger and safer.

At the same time, the station wagon acquired a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, which is not yet available in Russia.

In our country, Outback is sold with the previous 2.5-liter boxer unit, which is combined with a variator and all-wheel drive by default.

As before, in terms of the aggregate characteristics, the Japanese station wagon remains a unique product for the Russian market: it has no direct competitors.

But for such a feature you have to pay a lot, since prices for Outback start at 3.87 million rubles.

But already in the basic version, leather seats and a proprietary EyeSight security complex are available, which «copies» the perception of the surrounding space by the human eye.

In more expensive trim levels, additional comfort options appear.


Despite the fact that the 2022 Subaru Outback has undergone significant changes as part of the modernization, it cannot be said that it received a new body.

Judging by the official photos, the manufacturer made rather cosmetic changes to the exterior of the car.

However, after the modernization, Subaru has deeply reworked the configuration and prices.

Also, the technical characteristics of the Japanese model have changed no less significantly.

Subaru said the new Outback is built on SGP’s proprietary modular platform, which is used on virtually all of the brand’s other products.

At the front of the station wagon are McPherson struts with aluminum L-shaped lower arms and a 23mm hollow stabilizer bar.

At the rear there is an independent suspension with two wishbones. It is complemented by a «subframe» and 19 «anti-roll bar.

During the modernization, Subaru engineers increased the rigidity of the body by 70%, the rear «subframe» — by 50%.

In Russia, the Japanese model is available with a 2.5-liter boxer engine, which is combined with the Start / Stop system. Its declared net power reaches 188 hp. with a torque of 245 N * m.

Together with the proprietary continuously variable variator, this unit provides acceleration to 100 km / h in 9.6 seconds, consuming an average of 7.3 liters of fuel.

In other markets, the Outback is also offered with a new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. Its maximum output reaches 264 hp.

The proprietary variator was also improved during the last modernization. As before, the Outback comes with four-wheel drive by default.

The length of the Japanese station wagon is now 4870 mm, width — 1875 mm, height — 1675 mm. The wheelbase is 2745 mm, the ground clearance is 213 mm.

Options and prices

So far, the new 2022 Subaru Outback is sold in Russia in three versions with all-wheel drive.

The basic version of the Japanese model is estimated in Russia at 3.87 million rubles. Already in this modification, the variator is supplemented with gearshift paddles, and the electric power steering — with the function of changing the gear ratio.

The Outback comes standard with 18-inch aluminum rims, an electronic parking brake and LED lighting, including front fog lamps.

The head optics of the station wagon are combined with the function of automatic inclusion in the dark, the wipers — in the rain.

Most of these systems are proprietary complex EyeSight, which works on the same principle as the human eye.

It, interacting with cameras of rear, side and forward view, warns of the presence of danger at a distance of several hundred meters.

The initial version also includes an off-road assistance system, which reduces the likelihood of skidding on slippery surfaces and prevents getting stuck.

For a surcharge, with the basic version of the Japanese model, you can purchase an electric drive for the front passenger seat, which remembers the selected settings.

The station wagon has a dual-zone air conditioning system, a six-speaker stereo system and an 11.6-inch touchscreen monitor, which the Outback got after a generational change.

In addition, a self-dimming rear-view mirror, an undersized spare wheel and a navigation system are supplied with the Japanese model.

The average grade costs 3.93 million rubles in Russia. A relatively small surcharge is provided for the appearance of a premium stereo system with ten speakers and a subwoofer.

In the interior of the Japanese model, new decorative elements with a lacquered surface appear, and the roof of the car is decorated with an electrically adjustable sunroof.

The 2022 Subaru Outback in the top-end version will cost almost 4 million rubles.

This modification differs from the previous ones only due to the decorative trims on the body in silver color and an audio system that supports CD.


The crash test showed that the 2022 Subaru Outback is one of the safest cars.

According to the published results, only one rating parameter was awarded by experts to the general as “good”.

As part of the crash test, it became clear that in a side impact on the right side, the passenger’s head could move between the airbags.

All other elements responsible for protection (including the power structure of the body) worked perfectly. Also, in the framework of the crash test, the built-in security systems received positive marks.

Handling and off-road capabilities

During the change of generations, Subaru engineers deeply reworked the Outback’s suspension, which directly affected the driving characteristics of the station wagon.

As a result, the Japanese model has become softer to ride on smooth asphalt. After the modernization, the buildup that was characteristic of the pre-reform station wagon disappeared.

The suspension of the Japanese novelty left behind an ambiguous impression: in some cases, it behaved too hard, not damping blows.

At the same time, the new Outback with the previous 2.5-liter engine does not provide sufficient dynamics: the car still accelerates slowly.

And when cruising speed is reached on the highway, pressing the gas pedal does not lead to significant changes in the behavior of the station wagon.

In this regard, when overtaking, the driver has to use the steering column switches.
