Tesla Model Y 2024.

First came the Model S. It was followed by the Model X crossover and a year later by the most budget-friendly Tesla Model 3.

This year, another brainchild of Ilon Musk became available to buyers — the compact SUV Model Y. Finally, the acronym S3XY — from «sexy» — sounded in full force!

This time Ilon Musk, despite the general economic downturn and stagnation, even managed to get ahead of the planned delivery schedule for the new Tesla Model Y.

The new Tesla Model Y uses the platform of the Model 3, its power structure and, accordingly, the scheme of electric motors and suspensions — on double wishbones at the front and «multilever» at the back (both spring version and version with air elements are possible).

According to Ilon Musk himself, these electric cars are 75% unified.

There will be no «seagull wings» opening upwards, as in the «senior» crossover «X» — only the usual swinging doors without frames, as on the «three».

The main difference is the hatchback body, not the sedan, which allowed to move aside the body pillars and increase the space in the back.

The drag coefficient in both models is the same (only 0,23), as well as the weight distribution — 54/46 in favor of the rear axle.

The Model Y is 57 mm longer than the Model 3 (4751 vs. 4694), 71 mm wider (1920 vs. 1849), 181 mm higher (1624 vs. 1443), the wheelbase is the same — 2875 mm, but the crossover ground clearance is 175 mm, while the «three» has only 140 mm of clearance.

There is an optional third row of seats, base 19-inch wheels instead of 18-inch (maximum — 21 inches), and the volume of luggage compartments — almost two «cubic meters» (1926 liters, the front trunk — 56 liters).

For now, only the «top» all-wheel-drive twin-engine versions of the Model Y are available (more on that later) with a water-cooled Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 75 kW⋅h, for which Musk gives a warranty of eight years or almost 200,000 kilometers of mileage.

Possible modifications and specifications

At the moment, four modifications of the Tesla Model Y are announced — Standard Range RWD and Long Range RWD, as well as Long Range All-Wheel Drive and Performance.

Already from their names it is clear that the first two — rear-wheel drive (that’s a crossover!) and equipped with one engine on the rear axle, and the Performance and Long Range AWD have two electric motors, and drive — on both axles.

The base version with a 50-kilowatt battery and 271-horsepower (350 Nm) engine has a cruising range of 390 km, accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and achieves «maximum» of 193 km/h.

Rear-drive Long Range (75 kW⋅h) changes the second «hundred» half a second faster, gets up to 209 km/h and most importantly, can travel 483 km without «refueling».

The fastest (due to increased to 450 horsepower and torque to 639 Nm) — Tesla Model Y Performance with almost the same range without charging (507 km), «maximum» of 233 km/h and acceleration to «hundred» in just 3.7 seconds.

Interior and equipment

In the front of the cabin Tesla Model Y is almost exactly like its «donor» — the Model 3. The same «clean» front panel, the same steering wheel with two wheels controlling all the functions, the same horizontally oriented 15-inch «tablet», the same flat floor, the same huge panoramic roof.

But all the seats are set higher, adjustable backs of the rear fold down (three sections in the ratio 40:20:40), and in the «trunk» for an extra fee ($ 3000 in the USA), you can install two additional «children’s» chairs. Yes, yes, the Model Y is the first Tesla 7-seater!

In the back, «Y» is much more spacious and airy than the sedan Model 3, despite the same length of the wheelbase, primarily due to a high roof: even three adults will sit down without problems. There are two additional compartments under the mats at the feet of rear passengers (for garbage or some small items).

It is also worth mentioning that the rear luggage compartment is quite roomy — up to 1870 liters with the folded backrests.

This new American model costs 61,990 dollars a little bit cheaper than the present car, but it is better, than nothing.

Early indications point to a range somewhere in the neighborhood of 449 miles on a single charge. This was the range of the last two-engine, all-wheel-drive Model Y.

It’s unclear when Tesla will introduce this model. But the brand has done the internal work to make it possible.
