The first Roadster deliveries could begin as early as next year.

The businessman announced the unusual function of the Roadster on the air of Joe Rogan’s podcast, to whom he had previously told about a folding solar panel on the roof of the future Tesla van.

The Roadster will receive «some rocket technology» that will be included in an optional SpaceX sports package, named after Musk’s aerospace company, Musk said.

As it turned out, the package will not only improve the performance of the car, but also add a real flight function — if, of course, the developers cope with Musk’s instructions. In this case, the Roadster will be lifted into the air by small rocket boosters operating on compressed cold gas.

“I’m trying to figure out how to make this thing float without killing people,” Musk said.

For safety reasons, the car will be able to take off only 1-1.8 meters (the businessman has not yet decided on the height). In this case, in the event of a sudden failure in the engines, Tesla will fall and damage only the suspension, and the passengers will remain intact.

Musk noted that the car will be able to move forward while in the air, and «fairly quickly», but the hover time will be limited.

The Roadster’s interior with the SpaceX package will be a two-seater: the rear seats will be dismantled and replaced with a carbon-clad high-pressure cylinder that will power additional engines.

They will also be installed in the front and rear: according to Musk’s idea, the nozzles of the rear engines will appear in the style of James Bond — from under a sliding license plate.

The head of the brand described this function as a minimum plan.

According to preliminary data, the electric car will receive a three-engine power plant — it will probably borrow it from the Model S with the Plaid attachment.

The engines develop 1,034 horsepower and accelerate the electric car to 60 miles (97 kilometers per hour) in 1.99 seconds.
