There will be no new Volvo XC90. The flagship SUV of the Swedish brand will receive a different name.

At the beginning of this century, the XC90 ushered in the crossover era for Volvo, and the new flagship will herald a technical paradigm shift and a full transition to electric vehicles.

On June 30, Volvo Cars unveiled the Concept Recharge, which opens a new chapter in the design of the Swedish brand’s cars.

By 2025, half of the cars sold to it should have an electric power plant, and in 2030 the internal combustion engine will finally become a thing of the past.

At the Concept Recharge presentation, Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson, quoted by Automotive News Europe, said that Volvo’s new electric flagship will indeed have some of the concept’s features, but at the same time it will have a completely new name, not the XC90!

It turns out that Volvo will gradually move away from the alphanumeric indexes of its models, but what will replace them is still a secret.

The Swedish brand’s flagship electric crossover will debut next year, as will the Polestar 3 soplatform coupe SUV.

These two crossovers will be the first carriers of the new SPA2 modular EV platform at Volvo’s American plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina.

The large electric Volvo will go on sale in early 2023, while the Volvo XC90 will be produced and sold in parallel for some time and may even receive further technical and cosmetic updates.

That is, it is too early to say goodbye to the XC90, the model remains in service.

The electric successor to the Volvo XC60, which is expected in 2024, will obviously also be called the XC60, but something else.

Thanks to a partnership with Swedish battery startup Northvolt, Volvo plans to extend the range of its electric vehicles to 1,000 km per charge.

If she succeeds, parting with the internal combustion engine will be easy and relaxed.
