BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse 2025: new top version with manual transmission and retuned chassis.
BMW has finally offered its fans a top-end roadster with a manual transmission, and it costs noticeably more than a similar version with an automatic transmission.
The BMW Z4 roadster of the current G29 generation has been produced since 2018 at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria; the technically related Toyota GR Supra coupe is also assembled here, the 6-cylinder top version of which acquired a manual transmission back in 2022.
In turn, the BMW Z4 has been available with a manual transmission since its debut, but only in combination with the base 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 197 hp.
In 2022, the BMW Z4 underwent a planned restyling, and only now it has a top version on the “handle”, it received the name Pure Impulse, which is translated into Russian as “pure impulse”.
The BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse is equipped with a standard 3.0-liter in-line petrol turbo six B58 (340 hp, 500 Nm), coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission with a gearshift mechanism configured specifically for this model.
The installation of a “mechanics” made it possible to reduce the curb weight of the roadster by 15 kg to 1550 kg, acceleration to 100 km/h with a manual transmission takes 4.6 seconds, with an 8-speed hydromechanical “automatic” — 4.5 seconds, maximum speed in both cases limited at 250 km/h.
Other technical features of the Pure Impulse version are a specially tuned chassis: auxiliary springs are installed in the suspension “all around”, the clamps of the front anti-roll bar are strengthened, the settings of the rear adaptive shock absorbers and steering mechanism are changed, the settings of the traction control system and the M Sport limited-slip differential are changed.
In addition, the wheel size has been changed: the rear tires of the BMW Z4 M40i with a manual transmission are 10 mm wider than those of a similar roadster with an automatic transmission.
The size of the front tires on the Pure Impulse version is 255/35 ZR 19, the rear tires are 285/30 ZR 20. On the BMW Z4 M40i with automatic transmission there are 255/40 ZR 18 tires at the front and 275/40 ZR 18 at the rear.
Visual differences between the Pure Impulse version and the others include a special wheel design, red brake calipers, extended gloss black exterior trim, darkened nameplates, and exclusive Vernasca leather interior trim with several colors to choose from.
Production of the three-pedal BMW Z4 M40i will begin in March and will be available in Europe and the USA.
In Germany, a 6-cylinder roadster with a manual transmission costs from 75,300 euros, while a similar version with an automatic transmission starts from 69,300 euros.
For comparison, let’s say that the minimum price of a Toyota GR Supra with a 6-cylinder engine and manual transmission in Germany is now 66,450 euros; a similar coupe with an automatic transmission can be bought for 67,850 euros.
