Volkswagen Golf R 2021: thrust vectoring and 320hp engine.
The Volkswagen Golf 8 family made its debut a year ago — then the presentation of the base hatchback took place, which was joined in the spring by powerful GT versions with gasoline, diesel and «soft hybrid» power plants.

Then the line included full-fledged hybrids and modifications with gas-powered engines. But the picture still looked incomplete without the extreme variant of the VW Golf R, traditionally located at the top of the range.

And such a car was finally presented to the public on November 4 in Germany.

The new Golf R 2021 features a distinctive body design, the most powerful engine and a newly developed all-wheel drive system with traction vectoring.

Sales of the car on the European market will start in the coming weeks. The price of new items will be approximately 50 thousand dollars (3.9 million rubles).

Features of the external appearance

Outside, the Erka does not look as aggressive and assertive as one might expect. A distinctive feature of the model is the gloss black decor used for the front air intakes and rear diffuser.

Also, the «charged» hatchback is easily recognized by the four round tailpipes. Other highlights include matte chrome mirror caps, a blue glow strip above the grille and headlights, and blue brake calipers with R branding.

For the new Volkswagen Golf R, original 18-19-inch rims have been matched. The exterior color palette includes Lapiz Blue Metallic, Pure White and Deep Black Pearl Effect.

Completion and finishing

The interior of the most productive Golf has a specific decor with blue accents, carbon elements and R-symbols.

The front sports seats are upholstered in Nappa leather, and the steering wheel features comfortable paddles for DSG control and an R button for quick mode selection.

There are two information displays — a customizable instrument panel Digital Cockpit and a 10-inch touchscreen of the Discover Pro media center.

The latter displays a greeting when opening the car doors. The 30-shade backlight is synchronized with the display.

In the hatchback technique, perhaps, the main innovations are concentrated. It all starts with the power unit — the «turbo four» 2.0 TSI of the EA888 series has undergone another upgrade and now produces 320 hp. instead of the previous 300 forces.

The torque has been increased from 400 to 420 Nm. Either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed robotic DSG gearbox is installed in pair with the motor.

All-wheel drive 4Motion at «Erka» is also new. The rear differential now distributes traction not only between the axles, but also between the rear wheels.

Thanks to separate clutches, up to 100% of the torque can be transmitted to each of the wheels. There are several driving modes that affect the operation of the drive — four basic (Comfort, Sport, Race and Individual) and two additional (Special and Drift).

The names speak for themselves, except that the Special preset needs some explanation. It is based on Race mode, but modified to optimize the Nürburgring North loop.

Well, the Drift profile allows you to start a car into a skid, however, it is activated only after confirmation, since it does not imply use on public roads.

The Golf R’s suspension has also undergone major upgrades. The camber angles of the front wheels were changed, stiffer springs and stabilizers were introduced, and the wishbones were redesigned. The size of the brake discs at the front has been increased from 340 to 358 mm. Lighter aluminum brake calipers are installed.

The ground clearance of the «charged» hatchback is 20 mm less than that of the base five-door. The most powerful Golf accelerates to 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds, while the top speed of the car is 250 or 270 km / h (the limit is increased when ordering the R Performance package).
