The updated Toyota GR86 coupe will receive the engine from the “charged” GR Yaris and the Lexus IS platform.
A number of media reports that the new generation of the Toyota GR86 sports coupe will soon be built on Toyota’s own platform.
It is also said that the model will be based on a shortened Lexus IS chassis, where the engine from the “charged” baby GR Yaris will be installed.
For its second generation, Toyota decided to differentiate the GR86 from the Subaru BRZ a little more.
This may just be the beginning, as rumors from Japan suggest that the third-generation sports car could get a Toyota engine and a Lexus platform.
Reports indicate that Toyota engineers are already hard at work on the next iteration and that they may ditch Subaru’s flat-four engine entirely.
In its place, Toyota’s 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine was allegedly chosen.
The rumors only quote unnamed sources and come from the Japanese site Best Car Web.
However, the three-cylinder engine was certainly a success for the automaker.
The GR Corolla currently produces 300 hp, which would be a big jump from the current GR86, which has 235 hp from its four-cylinder engine.
However, it looks like Toyota isn’t just done with the Subaru engine.
The same is done with the Subaru platform, as the 1.6-liter engine will reportedly be installed in a shortened version of the chassis that underpins the Lexus IS.
The latter can be equipped with a 472 hp 5.0-liter V8 engine, so it’s more than capable of accommodating Toyota’s three-cylinder engine.
However, the base version has a four-cylinder engine that’s less powerful than the GR Corolla, so it doesn’t need as much power to be fun.
