The delay in the release of the electric car was due to the difficulties the firm was experiencing. It was decided to involve Chinese investors in cooperation. The company announced that the cars will be built with China’s tech conglomerate, the well-known LeEco company.

The launch of the first electric car was scheduled for 2018, but investors, on whom they had high hopes, left the project due to their own financial difficulties.

Williams Advanced Engineering had to turn to Williams Advanced Engineering for help in bringing the announced electric car to market, who supplied the fillings for the Formula 1 electric cars. The latter agreed to provide assistance, but the volume of cars had to be reduced to the already mentioned 155 cars (against the planned 400).

Nevertheless, the fact that the release of the electric car Aston Martin Rapide E will take place is an important step, laying the foundation for subsequent models that are already being developed, but according to different canons, i.e. without reference to classical architecture.


Little is known about him, but the fact that a 10-inch instrument cluster will appear there, with advanced functionalities corresponding to the specifics of the car (the remaining battery charge, speed, mode, etc. are displayed, and it is also possible to build a route in navigation with charging stations on the way ), a company representative said at the exhibition.

The large color display will be located behind the steering wheel. Another, but smaller (8-inch), intended for infotainment purposes, will be installed in the center of the dashboard

The Rapide E’s center console will feature comfortable, responsive buttons that mirror the panel keys.
The interior will be dominated by genuine leather.


There are three driving options for the novelty — the GT, Sport and Sport + modes. In each of them, the characteristics are controlled by electronics.


The appearance of the novelty is very similar to that of a car with an internal combustion engine, which served as the main creation of an electric car: an elongated front, smooth lines, narrow front optics and flat spokes that improve aerodynamic performance.

The electric version can be distinguished by accents in the brake calipers and headlights and by the blue fragments of the body.

To reduce the weight of the Rapide E, lightweight but durable materials were used — metal alloys and carbon fiber. Particular attention is paid to the cooling efficiency of motors and batteries.

The car received forged aluminum wheel rims with aerodynamic fairings. The tires for them are characterized by low rolling resistance — Pirelli P-Zero. They were specially developed for the novelty.


The five-door Rapide E liftback has a battery system designed around the area where the fuel tank, gearbox and motor are located in the classic version.

The car does not, like its counterparts, have a full battery, which affected the capacity of the latter, although it allowed to reduce development costs. As a result, the weight of the novelty surpassed the predecessor model by 181 kg and amounted to 2139 kg.

Important: The Rapide E battery, according to the assurances of the developers, does not lose power over the entire operating range: even when fully discharged, it will provide the electric motor with the proper current.


The battery can be quickly recharged with high-speed charging, including on the go. From the 50 kW terminal it will last more than an hour, from a powerful 100 kW source it will be finished in 40 minutes.


All ideas have not been realized yet: the Rapide E does not have all-wheel drive, as it was not possible to achieve the intended power of 1000 «horses».

The Rapide E will be rear-wheel-drive: the wheels are rotated by sequential motors with a total power of 603 hp. (950 Nm). Two motors of 600 horsepower will allow the car to accelerate to a hundred in 4 seconds, which is much faster in comparison with the gasoline relative, but does not reach Tesla.

The limited slip differential is retained in the transmission.
The body of the Rapide E has received minimal changes from the petrol version, which is the basis.

Therefore, the batteries are not placed under the floor as planned, but are divided into sections and placed in the space normally occupied by a V12 engine, fuel tank and gearbox.

Hence the small capacity of the Rapide E battery — 65 kWh: for comparison, Tesla has 75 kWh. Therefore, the novelty will not be a competitor to the latter.

Although, the Rapide E’s declared capacity is enough to cover more than 322 km of track without recharging.
The maximum design speed is 250 km / h.

The cost

By the end of this year, cars will be received by residents of California. But, so far nothing is known about the price. It was assumed earlier that the price for the Aston Martin Rapide E will not be lower than 255 thousand US dollars.
